A handful of passionate chefs simply believed Southern ingredients deserved world class treatment. Over time the rest of the country started noticing. Today Birmingham has collected multiple James Beard Awards, national media attention, and a growing list of talented chefs who continue pushing the city’s food scene forward.
For a city its size, Birmingham quietly delivers an incredible dining experience. Visitors often arrive expecting good Southern cooking and leave wondering how a city this friendly and relaxed produces food this exceptional.
Let’s dig in.
For decades, one restaurant sat at the center of Birmingham’s culinary reputation.
Chef Frank Stitt opened Highlands in the early 1980s with a bold vision, Southern ingredients prepared with the precision and care of European fine dining. Long before farm-to-table became trendy, Stitt was working directly with Alabama farmers and Gulf Coast fishermen.
In 2018 Highlands Bar and Grill won the James Beard Award for Outstanding Restaurant in America, one of the highest honors in the culinary world. Frank Stitt had already won Best Chef Southeast, and Highlands’ beloved pastry chef Dolester Miles won Outstanding Pastry Chef that same year.
Sadly, Highlands Bar and Grill has remained closed since the pandemic and it appears unlikely the restaurant will reopen. For many Birmingham residents this restaurant represented more than a great meal. It was where anniversaries were celebrated, where visitors were taken to experience the city, and where generations of chefs learned their craft. Its influence still shapes Birmingham’s restaurant culture today.
Hot and Hot Fish Club, created by Chef Chris Hastings, became known for its creative blend of Gulf seafood, seasonal vegetables, and global inspiration.
In 2012 Chris Hastings won the James Beard Award for Best Chef South, confirming what locals already believed, Birmingham chefs could compete with the best in the country.
Just outside Birmingham in Bessemer sits a restaurant that has been welcoming guests for more than a
century.
The Bright Star opened in 1907 and remains the oldest restaurant in Alabama. The menu features steaks, snapper, and Greek influenced Southern dishes that have stood the test of time.
In 2010 the restaurant received the James Beard America’s Classic Award, honoring legendary establishments that define regional dining.
Eating there feels like stepping into Alabama history.
Bottega blends Italian cooking with Southern ingredients in one of the city’s most beautiful dining rooms. Chez Fonfon feels like a charming little corner of Paris with classic steak frites and a beloved burger.
Helen showcases modern Southern cuisine cooked over a wood fired hearth. Automatic Seafood and Oysters is a lively destination for Gulf oysters and seafood towers.
Gianmarco’s is a favorite for handmade pasta and authentic Italian flavors. El Barrio brings energy downtown with bold Mexican dishes and excellent margaritas
Recently I ordered the pork with cheesy grits, greens, and fried onion rings. The pork was smoky and
tender, the grits were rich and creamy, the greens had that perfect Southern comfort flavor, and the onion rings were crispy and golden.
It was one of those meals where every bite makes you pause for a second because it tastes so good.
A photo of that plate will definitely be going in the blog.
Visitors exploring Birmingham often spend time in Mountain Brook, and several excellent restaurants there deserve a visit.
Dyron’s Low Country serves refined Southern coastal cuisine with warm hospitality. Daniel George Restaurant and Bar is a longtime favorite known for creative Southern inspired dishes.
Golden Age Wine Garden offers a charming outdoor space with great wine and thoughtful small plates. Slim’s Pizzeria delivers delicious pizza and a fun patio atmosphere that stays lively well into the evening
Alabama farms produce incredible vegetables, and the nearby Gulf Coast provides some of the freshest seafood in the country.
Many of today’s chefs were influenced by the culture of mentorship that Frank Stitt helped create, emphasizing craftsmanship, hospitality, and respect for ingredients.
Most importantly, Birmingham residents genuinely love restaurants. That support allows chefs to experiment and keep raising the bar.
